Ever read a plant care guide, found the word "node", and wondered what it is, why it does, and why you should know about it? So was I when I first started propagating houseplants. Luckily, nodes are easy to understand and you don't have to have a biology degree to learn why they're so important when propagating your plants!
In this plant care guide, we're going to look at these topics:
Let's learn more about nodes and why they're important for propagation!
What is a node?
Nodes are the little bumps you often see along the stem of your houseplants. These bumps are thicker parts of a stem that contain growth hormones. Because these bumps contain the growth hormone, it's also the spot on your plant where new stems and leaves will grow out of.
You may be wondering, what's actually inside these little plant nodes that make them so special? A plant node is packed with growth hormones that decide what the plant will grow next: a leaf, a stem, or perhaps even a flower.
So how does this help you during propagation? Let's find out!
How do nodes help in propagating plants?
So nodes are a little like mini plant factories. The hormones inside the nodes are almost an instruction manual. They know exactly how to make every part of the plant, and they're always ready to start building! That's why when we propagate houseplants, we focus on these nodes. As soon as we take a stem cutting, cutting right below the node, we activate these growth hormones and they'll start to put energy into growing roots.
This is why it's important to cut right below a node and not in the middle of a stem; we want to give those growth hormones the best opportunity to work their magic.
Tips for finding nodes on your plants
So nodes are important, but how can you be sure you've found one so your propagation has a higher rate of success? There are 3 ways you can make sure you've found a node on your plant!
- Look for bumps: As mentioned earlier, nodes are often visible as small bumps along the stem of your plant. These bumps can vary in size and color depending on the plant, so keep an eye out for any irregularities along the stem.
- Check the leaves: Nodes are usually where leaves or stems grow out from, so look for a leaf or new stem that is attached to a thicker part of the main stem. This thick part is likely a node.
- Follow the pattern - Some plants have more obvious nodes, with distinct patterns along the stem. Look for these patterns and you'll likely find a node there.
Once you've found a node on your plant, you can use this information to propagate your plant. Let's look at some practical tips to use the information to increase the chances of a propagation project.
Tips for propagation and nodes
Now that you know about nodes and how they help in propagation, let's talk about some practical tips for using this knowledge to successfully propagate your houseplants.
- Make sure your cutting has at least one node: As we learned before, nodes are where new growth will come from, so it's important to have at least one node on your cutting to increase your chances of successful propagation.
- Keep an eye on humidity: Nodes are more likely to produce roots in a humid environment, so consider using a plastic bag or clear container to create a mini greenhouse for your cuttings.
- Give it enough light: Although nodes can produce roots in many conditions, they do best when they have access to a good amount of indirect light. Place your propagation station near a window or under a grow light.
- Practice patience: Nodes work at their own pace. They will produce roots eventually, but it may take some time. It's important not to rush or stress your cuttings, as stress can lead to failure in propagation. Give it a nice spot in your house with very little environmental changes.
- Use sterilized tools: This is a crucial yet often overlooked step. Always make sure the tools you're using to cut your plant are sterilized to avoid the possibility of introducing bacteria or fungus to your cuttings.
With these tips, you'll be on your way to successfully propagating your houseplants and expanding your plant collection in no time! The nodes are your best friends when it comes to propagating your plants. They'll do the hard work and you're there to give your node the best change by giving it a good growing environment.
Remember to always cut right below a node for the best chance of success, and keep an eye out for those little bumps along your plant's stem.
