How to repot your plants in Leca

In this story, we're going to repot a plant that's planted in Leca. Together, we'll find out how to wash Leca and repot our plant.

Let's get started!

From the beginning

We're going to start out with a fresh bag of Leca. We'll get to see the whole process, from start to end!

Add the Leca you need to a bucket, be careful not to breathe in the dust that might come from the bag. It's best to do this outdoors, as it could be messy.

Washing time!

Start to add water to your bucket. It doesn't matter if it's warm or cold water.

Add enough water to the bucket so the Leca has a chance to float in the bucket. You can already see how dirty the water has become.

When there is enough water, you can start to wash the Leca. You can do this with your hand or something else that you can stir the clay around with.

After a minute or two, you'll notice that the water is very brown. It's time to move the Leca to an empty bucket.

When you move the Leca, you'll notice that the clay balls aren't completely clean yet. This is normal.

Rinse and repeat

When you've all the Leca in the new bucket, you'll have to repeat the whole process again. It takes a little time, but it's worth the effort!

After the first rinse, the water will be very brown and dirty. This is normal. Throw this water away (preferable outdoors) and clean your bucket.

Repeat this process about 3-5 times, until the water is as light or lighter than what you see here. This could take a while, so be patient.

Back to the plants

Now that our Leca is ready to go, we'll have to prepare the plant.

When working with Leca, it's best to get a larger container to catch any falling clay balls. They will fall and can be tough to find.

You can now carefully remove any loose Leca from the pot. The bigger container will help you to catch any clay balls, so you can focus on emptying the pot.

Remove any plant accessoires along the way, so you can reach your plant better and have fewer obstacles.

Keep removing Leca from the pot until you can remove the plant from the pot completely. Make sure to keep your plant in the container to avoid losing clay balls.

Because this pot is bigger, create a base layer of Leca. This will prevent your plant from sitting in a layer of water.

Potting your plant

Carefully place your plant on top of the base layer you've created earlier.

Adjust the positions

You can adjust the position of your plant to your liking. Do this now, while you can still freely move the plant.

Now you can add in more Leca and put the plant accessoires back into place. Hold your plant into the position you like with 1 hand.

Enjoy your plants!

Take a step back and admire your plant! You've successfully repotted it in Leca and given it more space to grow.
