My Overall Top #1 Pick: TACKLIFE Lawn Mower L9, 40V Max 4.0Ah, Brushless Motor, 16IN Cordless Lawn Mower

This Tacklife lawn might be a little on the small side, but that doesn’t make it any less effective for mowing your wet grass. This battery-powered lawn mower has about the same runtime with wet grass as dry. You’ll get 30 minutes of runtime on a single charge, even when your grass is wet.

6 different cutting heights give you the flexibility you need for wet grass. That makes it easy to raise the cutting height, perfect for when you need a trim but the grass is too wet to take a lot of height off. The different height settings also make it easier to cut your grass low after trimming a wet lawn.

The brushless motor is more durable and long lasting than most. This lawn mower is a great investment if you’re looking for something that will out-last the competition.

The only problem is that the 16 inch cutting deck is really best for small lawns. It’s a little too small for large properties.

Why Do You Need a High-Quality Lawn Mower For Wet Grass?

Normally I don’t recommend mowing wet grass. There are a few reasons mowing wet grass isn’t great for your lawn, but sometimes there isn’t much of a choice. Having a high-quality lawn mower can help keep your lawn healthier and make mowing easier.

High quality lawn mowers are typically easier to adjust, which is important when you’re working with wet grass because you won’t want to use your normal mowing settings. There are plenty of height settings on most high-quality lawn mowers, and you don’t want to work with a lawn mower that has less than 3.

High quality lawn mowers are also significantly more likely to be able to handle the extra weight and load of wet grass. The heavier your lawn mower blade is when the motor is running, the harder the motor has to work.

There’s also the factor that high quality lawn mowers tend to come with high quality blades, which hold up under the weight of wet grass much better. Good lawn mower blades are also less likely to rust or corrode from wet grass, and will maintain a better edge over time.

How to Pick the Best Lawn Mower for Wet Grass?

There are a few things you need to look for in your lawn mower if you know that you’re going to need to mow wet grass. Wet grass doesn’t need special features or abilities compared to regular grass mowing, but it needs better and more powerful versions of those features.

Two important features I look for in a lawn mower for wet grass are adjustable height settings and side-grass discharge.

Adjustable Height Settings

Adjustable height settings are critical for mowing wet grass because it’s not a good idea to mow wet grass the same height you would mow dry grass. Wet grass is clingier and more prone to clumping, so it should be cut in smaller chunks.

Having a lot of adjustable height settings allows you move the lawn mower up higher, giving your grass a trim without cutting off as much of the grass.

Having higher adjustment options gives you the option of lifting your lawn mower higher for tall grasses as well as for wet grass. Taller trimming height can also be beneficial for some varieties of grass, so it’s always important to have at least a couple of adjustable height settings, not just when you’re mowing wet grass.

Side Grass Clipping Discharge

I recommend looking for a lawn mower that can handle discharging clippings out the side of the lawn mower, without bagging, if you’re going to mow wet grass. You may need to go over the clumps of grass with the lawn mower a second time to help break them up, but it reduces the odds of the grass clogging next to the blade and creating too much friction.

Other Important Features

Those two features are the main considerations I have when I’m looking for a lawn mower specifically for wet grass, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not also looking for other features.

It’s still important to consider the power source, run time, and maintenance requirements of your lawn mower. I also look for lawn mowers that are relatively easy to start, even if they use the traditional pull-chain. Maneuverability and low-vibration are great features to look for if you have a large lawn because they make the work easier without tiring out your arms and shoulders.

*Disclaimer* – Remember, as much as possible you should mow your grass when it’s dry. A lot of experts think that you shouldn’t even try to mow wet grass. I know that that isn’t always practical, which is why I put together this guide. But, you should know that I do not recommend mowing wet grass.

Its also even more important to pay attention to safety if you’re mowing wet grass, and to use every lawn mowing tip and trick you know. Here’s a few more lawn mowing tips to get you started.

My Reviews of the Lawn Mowers for Wet Grass

1. TACKLIFE Lawn Mower L9, 40V Max 4.0Ah, Brushless Motor, 16IN Cordless Lawn Mower

This battery powered little lawn mower packs a lot of bang for your buck. Its motor can handle more intense cutting, like mowing wet lawns or mulching grass clippings, but it’s also quieter than your average gas powered lawn mower.

Its folding design makes this lawn mower easy to store, and even easy to move from place to place. If you have a segmented yard and need to mow several lawns, this might be a good option.

I don’t recommend using the bag feature when you’re mowing wet grass, but it’s nice to have for when your lawn is dry.

The wheels also have a reasonable amount of traction. I will note that this lawn mower’s wheels can be a little slick when they’re wet, so it’s not great for wet grass and hills. But, this lawn mower can handle either one on it’s own.

It’s also a really low maintenance lawn mower, so it’s a good option for people who don’t want to put a lot of extra work into their lawn mower.

PROS (+) CONS (-)
+ Lightweight
+ Powerful motor
+ Eco-friendly
+ Durable
+ Folding for easy storage

– 16 inch cutting deck isn’t good for large lawns

2. Greenworks 40V 21″ Brushless (Smart Pace) Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Greenworks offers another powerful battery powered lawn mower if you’re looking for a slightly larger and more versatile option.

I love that these lawn mowers are easy to start, easy to maintain, and offer good battery life.

This lawn mower also features slightly better traction on the wheels, so it’s a good option if your lawn is a little uneven or has a lot of hills.

The option to switch between side discharge, back bagging, and mulching features also help make this lawn mower more versatile in addition to mowing wet grass.

7 different height settings also work to make this lawn mower one of the best lawn mowers for wet grass.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ 7 different height settings
+ Eco-friendly
+ 70 minute average run time
+ Easy to start
+ Large cutting deck
– Switching between bagging and free discharge settings can be more difficult.

3. PowerSmart Lawn Mower, 21-inch & 170CC, Gas Powered Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

PowerSmart is a great brand if you’re in the market for a more affordable lawn mower that still brings a lot of power and efficiency to the table.

This model is relatively easy to start, offers good gas power, and has high traction wheels for maneuverability.

The lawn mower only has 5 height settings, but that’s still more than enough versatility for wet grass.

This is a gas powered lawn mower, which makes it a little less eco friendly than the first two options on this list.

Being gas powered also come with some additional maintenance. You’ll need to make sure the gas tank is filled, winterize your lawn mower to prevent gas seperation, and you’ll also need to check and make sure your lawn mower has oil before mowing.

Long term this lawn mower will likely cost a little more than a battery powered option, but it’s more affordable up front. This lawn mower is also just a little more powerful than most battery powered options.

PROS (+) CONS (-)
+ Clean cutting
+ Large cutting deck
+ Lightweight for gas powered model
+ Affordable
– Not an eco-friendly option

4. WORX WG779 40V Power Share 4.0 Ah 14″ Lawn Mower w/ Mulching & Intellicut

This Worx lawn mower is a good option for wet grass, but the wheels didn’t have quite enough traction for this version to make it into my top 3.

This lawn mower has 6 different height adjustment settings. That’s plenty to handle your wet grass, no matter how short or tall you want to keep it.

Mulching settings do let you skip bagging, which is perfect for wet grass. However, since mulching is more intense for the blade, you might have to replace these blades more often if you mulch wet grass.

Since this lawn mower uses two batteries at once for a longer run time and more power, it also comes with a dual space charger so you can charge them at the same time.

Overall this lawn mower does a good job when it comes to maneuverability. It’s fairly good on slopes, but the lack of traction from the wheels can be a big issue on steep slopes or when your grass is wet.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Easy To Maneuver
+ 2 batteries
+ Long runtime
+ Powerful motor
– Wheels don’t offer much additional traction

5. Craftsman M105 140cc 21-Inch 3-in-1 Gas Powered Push Lawn Mower with Bagger

Lastly I have another Craftsman model (since they are such a reliable brand!), but from a slightly more affordable range.

This model has a lot of the same advantages as the more expensive version, including high grip tread on the wheels, just streamlined and slightly less effective.

The pull start system doesn’t need primer and doesn’t have a choke, so it’s a lot simpler to get this model up and running.

One of the big differences between the two Craftsman models is that this version isn’t self-propelled.

That’s not always a bad thing though. If your lawn is very flat you might not need a self-propelled model. It also means that you have just a little more control at all times since you’re providing all of the lawn mower’s momentum.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ High traction wheels
+ Durable design
+ High powered engine
+ Easy start motor
– Not self-propelled
– Not eco-friendly

My Top Pick: TACKLIFE Lawn Mower L9, 40V Max 4.0Ah, Brushless Motor, 16IN Cordless Lawn Mower

Even though a lot of the lawn mowers on this list are great value and perfect for mowing wet lawns, this model offers the best combination of price and value. If you’re looking for a slightly more specialized model you might want one of the other options I’ve suggested, but for an average lawn this is a great option.

While the compact size might mean it takes a little longer to mow your lawn, it also needs significantly less storage space than larger models.

Not to mention that the 40V design and durable battery and motor bring a lot of power to the table.

Overall, unless you’re looking for some of the more specialized features included with the GreenWorks or Craftsman models, this is a great option.

Final Thoughts On The Lawn Mowers for Wet Grass

A lot of people assume that a regular lawn mower can handle wet grass just fine. That’s largely true, as long as you have a high end model. But, even though most lawn mowers can handle mowing wet grass, that doesn’t mean that they are good at it.

These models have all proven themselves successful in wet conditions, and offer the kind of durability and reliability you need in a lawn mower.

Of course, I’m also looking for other quality of life features like self-propulsion, accessories, and ease of use additions when I’m choosing a lawn mower. You should think carefully about which features are most important to you when you’re buying. No lawn mower is perfect for everyone, but knowing which features are most important to you can help make sure you buy a lawn mower you’ll love.

With that in mind, stay safe, and enjoy mowing!
